What is life coaching and why is it effective?

A life coach does for your life what a sports coaching does for athletes. Successful sports men and women know they need a coach to teach them valuable technical skills. A coach also helps them master their emotions and build self-confidence because they know that success is as much about keeping cool under pressure as it is about skill. During the Olympics athletes often say the most important person on their team is the one who helps them master their emotions – their mindset coach. Because a sports coach can see the athlete objectively and notice things they don’t see for themselves – their insights and constructive feedback can help the athlete make progress quicker.

Why life coaching?

If you’ve been brought up with the belief that you must do everything for yourself, it can seem strange to go to a life coach for help. But research shows 3 important things about human beings that suggest that working with a life coach is really a sensible approach to getting the most out of life:

Our brains are wired to respond in a Flight or Fight way to challenges. These reactions were very useful for our survival when we were living in the days of woolly mammoths! But, modern challenges need different approaches. An NLP trained Life Coach can use 21st century understanding about how your brain works to help you rewire your brain so that you can enjoy more control over your thoughts, emotions and actions. This will help you feel more confident, resourceful, creative and relaxed in the face of challenges.

In each coaching session we discuss how you’re progressing, celebrate your successes and decide on the next actions you’ll take towards your goals. Our brains are wired to see only a limited range of information and options otherwise we would go into overload. Often the solution to a challenge lies outside the range of information and options we are paying attention to. A life coach helps you see things you didn’t see before and turns our natural tunnel vision into funnel vision.

There are many resources to help you boost your confidence, deal with challenges and create changes in your life – training courses, life coaching, mentoring, counselling, psychotherapy, books, friends, family, partner and colleagues.

From books and training you can certainly get many useful techniques and the presentation style can be very motivating. But they can’t deal with your individual circumstances, personality, thoughts and emotions.

As a result, research shows that we implement only about 20% of what we learn in training courses (even less from books),while we tend to implement 80% from coaching. My sessions combine training, mentoring, NLP techniques and life coaching. Friends, family, partner and colleagues sometimes have useful experience, insight and encouragement to offer. However they are not trained to help you overcome the obstacles your thoughts and emotions put in your way. They are often too close to you to be objective. There may be skills you need that they don’t know about and sometimes it feels like these people are part of the problems you’re facing anyway! Do I need a coach, a counsellor, a trainer or a psychotherapist?

During the sessions you’ll make useful discoveries, experience breakthroughs and we’ll make plans and strategies to achieve your goals. How long does it take and how often are the NLP life coaching sessions?

You will see some results immediately. Others will take some time. It depends on what you want to achieve. I can be very flexible about how the life coaching programme is arranged. For instance, you can choose to have a series of weekly life coaching sessions, take a half-day block or most of my clients choose to book 6 one hour sessions in advance and space them at weekly intervals. This is a reasonable length of time to see some significant changes in your life. Many clients choose to continue because they discover that having a life coach on their ‘life team’ helps them to lead happier, healthier and wealthier lives. It makes life so much easier. Where do the NLP life coaching sessions take place?

Life coaching sessions take place over the phone, on Skype or face-to-face. We can meet at my coaching room in Cambridge. For longer life coaching sessions and for group life coaching or training, it’s possible for me to visit you. How does telephone life coaching work?

A client contacts me on the phone at an agreed time. Some people find this fits more easily into their busy schedule. It cuts out travelling time and allows them to have coaching where they want it – in their home, in their lunch hour at work or on their way to a challenging situation. Some clients prefer coaching on the telephone because they feel it allows them to be more open and honest about themselves.
